Buildings at Risk

Georgian Limerick

Hammering

Limerick city’s Georgian core of Newtown Pery was laid out in the 1760s to the designs of the Italian architect Davis Ducart. It is an area of national architectural interest for the quality of its streetscapes and for its urban form that faces significant challenges arising from over a century of poor investment and neglect.

In 2007 the Society organised a conference in association with Limerick City Council with the aim of identifying a way forward for Newtown Pery. Arising from this, the Society made in-depth submissions to the Council to advocate policies to secure investment in the area’s historic buildings stock.

These initiatives were influential in the preparation of a City Centre Strategy recently published by Limerick City Council which will be implemented over the next three years. This strategy has being prepared in response to a number of national initiatives including the National Spatial Strategy, the National Development Plan and the Atlantic Gateway Initiative.

The successful implementation of this strategy could mean a giant step forward for Limerick Georgian core.

The society is committed to working towards this and will assist Limerick City Council in its endeavours over the coming years.
