Many London Chapter members appreciate and enjoy the Society’s journal, Irish Architectural & Decorative Studies and the chapter is delighted to host the launch of Volume XVI this coming spring in London. Published annually in its current form since 1998 and produced to an international standard, it is the only journal dedicated to publishing new research into the work of Ireland’s architects, craftsmen, artists, garden designers and patrons.
The journal’s current editor is Dr Conor Lucey, an architectural and design historian whose research interests are centered upon the domestic architecture and material culture of eighteenth century Britain and Ireland. Dr Lucey is currently an Irish Research Council Elevate Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Pennsylvania.
Home to the Author’s Club (founded 1891) and located in a restored Georgian house retaining many of it’s original features, Blacks private members club was founded in 1991. Built in 1732 by John Meard, a carpenter who worked alongside Sir Christopher Wren at St Paul’s Cathedral, the house became a supper club (known simply as “the Club”) for intellectuals and was frequented by the author Samuel Johnson and painter Joshua Reynolds between 1764 and 1767. Nearly 250 years later, this Soho house once again welcomes writers and artists and prides itself on being the antithesis of the formal St. James’s clubs - the perfect venue for the launch of our journal!
Drinks will be served from 6.00pm and members are welcome to remain for dinner. Full details will be sent to those attending closer to the event. If you would like to attend, please send the following information to Colm Owens, Apartment 50, Kilner House, Clayton Street, London SE11 5SE. .
