Peter Francis ‘17th & 18th-Century Irish Glass and Ceramics; Some Major Recent Discoveries’

05.12.2017, 18:30 P.M.

For most of the last century it was believed that the history of fine-glass and ceramics manufacture in Ireland was well understood, but new documentary research and archaeological excavations in Dublin, Belfast and the United States have revealed that this country actually played a far more significant, international role than was previously recognised. Focusing on the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, this well-illustrated lecture will present all of this new and exciting evidence, much of which remains as yet unpublished. A Research Fellowship with the Institute of Irish Studies at Queen's University Belfast enabled Peter Francis to conduct the "Belfast Potteries Project" during the 1990s, in partnership with the Ulster Museum. He is now the author of three books on Irish fine-ceramics and many academic articles on early Irish glass.
