This is an interesting walk along the Dublin section of the canal. The walk begins where the Dublin to Belfast Road crosses the canal at Binns Bridge, Dorset Street. There are lots of places of historical interest covered and some of these include the sculpture of the author and playwright Brendan Behan, Mountjoy Jail, a development of splendid Georgian mansions that was never developed, the large limestone building at Cross Guns Bridge is Mallett’s Mill, Broadstone with King’s Inns and the old Broadstone Railway Station. For the past thirty years he has led walks and lectured on the history of the Royal Canal. His TCD historical geography thesis on the canal was published as The Royal Canal, the Complete Story (Elo Press) and ‘Walking the Royal” five walks from Dublin to Maynooth. Peter is a retired lecturer from the Dublin Institute of Technology, (TU Dublin). He is a long-time member of the Irish Georgian Society.
