Description:
Detached two-storey with dormer attic country house built in the late-seventeenth century set in a wooden demesne on the banks of the River Boyne. It was built on lands granted to Sir Henry Tichbourne in 1642 and remains in the family. The early adoption of unfortified, Dutch-influenced architecture is evidenced by its dormers, chimneystacks, steep roofs, and carved modillion cornice console brackets. Its richly decorated interiors feature elaborate plasterwork, carved wood, sash windows, and tromp-l’oeil paintings. The Irish Georgian Society funded a dendrochronological survey of Beaulieu which established that the construction of the house commenced in 1680/81, somewhat later than the 1660s date of family tradition, though earlier than the date of c. 1710 that had also been proposed.
