Conservation Lambay Island, Rush

Back to Building Projects

Description:

Located a few miles off the coast of Rush, County Dublin, Lambay Island originally comprised a sixteenth-century fort that was erected to defend a nearby port. In the early twentieth century, the ruined fort was transformed by the English architect Sir Edwin Lutyens into a home for Cecil Baring, the 3rd Baron Revelstoke, and his new wife, Maude. It is set within gardens designed by the celebrated garden designer Gertrude Jekyll who frequently collaborated with Lutyens on his country house projects. The house and island remain in the care of the Baring family with the resident guardian and curator being the 7th Lord Revelstoke.
