This dissertation will examine the architectural patronage of the Medici family from Giovanni de Bicci de’ Medici (1360-1429), through the line of his son Cosimo ‘Il Vecchio’ (1389-1464), as far as the Medici Pope Clement VII. The lifetimes of these men amount to nearly 175 years, during which time the family was extremely active in the patronage of art, literature and architecture. The object of this dissertation is to situate the architectural patronage of the family within the wider context of patronage in Quattrocentro and early Cinquecento Florence and to examine the extent to which Medici patronage conformed or departed from the norms of the time. This will be achieved through the discussion of two major projects of family patronage, the Palazzo Medici and the church of San Lorenzo.
