This study is an ‘in-depth study of the origin, evolution and construction of ABK’s (Ahrends Burton Koralek) Arts and Social Sciences Building at Trinity College Dublin from 1967 to 1978 with an evaluation of its merits and failings to the present day.’ Primary material hitherto unavailable has been examined to ‘provide a detailed account of the context in which the project came about, the internal discussions and the site visits prior to the selection of an architect and the creation of a comprehensive brief.’ ‘The development of ABK’s deep plan is analysed in terms of its responsiveness to the need for identity and sub-units in a large-scale university complex. Critical issues regarding the suitability of a conglomerate building for a university campus are also explored.
