This dissertation is essentially study of the influece of the Viennese coffee house on the interaction of artists and subsequent artistic renaissance at the end if the nineteenth century. The dissertation looks at the coffee house itself as a realm between public and private that encourages debate outside the academy, and explores the impact of the coffee house in the subsequent artistic movement generated by such discussion. The dissertation focuses on contemporary political and social change in relation to the cafe, and the cafe as a forum for these changes. The specific movements, such as Jung Wein to the Secession, to the birth of the expressionist group. Key figures including Kokoshka and Loos are studied in greater detail in the final chapter, as well as their sociological impact.
