In this dissertation, I propose to question the unjust lack of recognition of Emile Bernard in the light of his fellow contemporaries Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. For an artist who provided in the history of art, is one of considerable misfortune. Therefore, through analysing the relationships, behaviour and work between the three artists, a case for the innovative Bernard is made. In studying a number of factors which withheld him from a deserving legacy, it is important to understand the effects that certain elements beyond one’s control can have, for example the year in which he was born, in comparison to his elder, more experienced contempories. This thesis hopes to question the meaning of success and understand the lack of knowledge regarding the art of Emile Bernard.
