Events IGS & Dublin Decoded Walking Tour - West of Capel Street

Back to Events

15.03.2023, 14:00 P.M.

This walking tour led by Arran Henderson of Dublin Decoded tours includes an overview of how - starting from the 1600s - Capel Bridge and Capel Street rose in the former area of two medieval abbeys. The tour will also appraise significant architecture to the west of Capel Street, including Edwardian public housing on Ormond Square and the Victorian Fruit and Veg markets, with their superb stone carving and rich terracotta decoration. From there our walk takes in a convent, a school, further historic market buildings, the old Debtors' Prison and finally, the famed Green Street courthouse, where Arran will discuss the legendary Emmet trial and other highly charged legal events of the 19th century.

Tour starts at 2pm - Meeting outside the Gutter Bookshop, corner Essex St West with Cow Lane, Dublin 2.
