Events IGS Lecture: Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland with Dr Ciarán Wallace

Back to Events

10.01.2023, 18:00 P.M.

On 30 June 1922, the Public Record Office of Ireland was consumed in a catastrophic explosion and fire. In a single afternoon seven centuries of historical records were destroyed in the opening engagement of the Irish Civil War. In June 2022, on the centenary of the destruction, a free public online resource - the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland - was launched. This partnership of historians, archivists, and computer scientists used copies and transcripts to recreate thousands of lost records. Dr Ciarán Wallace will discuss the reconstruction work and show some of the records available to the public. Ciarán is Deputy Director of Beyond 2022 and has lectured at Trinity College Dublin, Dublin City University and Liverpool John Moore’s University.
