A Private House Visit in Queen Anne's Gate, Monday 23rd of November

The Queen Anne’s Gate property is a distinguished Grade I-listed Georgian townhouse, built between 1775 and 1778 on land formerly belonging to Christ’s Hospital. The property was primarily a private residence throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Amongst the notable residents of the street is Charles Townley (1737–1805), whose classical sculpture collection is now largely held by the British Museum. Sir Edward Vaughan Williams, a judge and Privy Councillor resident from 1836 until his death in 1875, was the grandfather of composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. In the early twentieth century, the house was associated with Venetia Stanley, who became the object of a controversial attachment with H. H. Asquith, the British Prime Minister during the First World War. Later in the twentieth century, the property was converted from residential use to commercial offices, with substantial 1980s alterations that removed much of its original interior character. The current owners acquired the property in January 2024 and began a restoration, reinstating original eighteenth-century chimney pieces and introducing historically appropriate cornices and other period features. Their aim has been to restore the property’s domestic character and bring it back to life as a distinguished Georgian residence.
