London Chapter Visit to Arundel Castle
11am, Wednesday, 14th October, Arundel, West Sussex, BN18 9AB
IGS London are pleased to offer a special visit to Arundel Castle, seat of the Dukes of Norfolk for over 850 years. A tour of the castle and its collections will be guided by Dr John Martin Robinson, librarian to the Duke of Norfolk since 1979 and a distinguished architectural historian. The tour will be followed by lunch.
Built in the second half of the 11th century by Roger Montgomery, Earl of Arundel, the castle and its inhabitants have been at the forefront of English history - from the War of the Roses and Tudor period, to the Civil War, and the reign of Queen Victoria (who visited the Castle in 1846). In addition to its rich history the castle also contains a significant collection of art and artifacts including furniture dating from the 16th century, a number of personal items that belonged to Mary, Queen of Scots, and paintings from renowned artists such as Van Dyck, Gainsborough, Reynolds, and Canaletto.
After lunch at the castle, members will be free to visit the castle gardens, the Cathedral, or the antique shops and galleries in Arundel.
