London Chapter Visit to Gloucestershire, Thursday, 29th October 2026
This visit to Gloucestershire will feature three outstanding houses -Chavenage House, Owlpen Manor, and Upton House. The day will include lunch with wine at Chavenage House.
Chavenage House
This Grade 1 listed building is one of the finest surviving Elizabethan manor houses in the region and built largely of Cotswold stone in around 1576. Its distinctive architecture and historic interiors have featured in many films and television series such as Poldark. Owned by the Stephens family for several generations with connections to Cromwell and the Civil War, it passed to the current owners, the Lowsley-Williams family in the late 19th century.
Owlpen Manor
Owlpen Manor is an historic Tudor manor near Uley in Gloucestershire with a history spanning almost a thousand years. It is renowned for its medieval origins, beautiful architecture, historic gardens and remarkable survival from near ruin.
Its history connects it with a number of old families, houses and estates throughout south west England, as well as Ireland, and with talented artists and writers and famous visitors.
Upton House
Upton House, just outside Tetbury, is a beautiful Georgian house of classical proportions built in 1752 which retains some of its 17th century origins but has been brilliantly extended in a very sympathetic manner by its current owner. Its double height entrance hall and cantilevered oak staircase are of particular note.
