For this inaugural lecture in memory of Mary Bryan (1936-2018) Livia Hurley will give a talk on Irish utopias, which situates settlements such as Portlaw and Bessbrook within the Irish Utopian Studies canon, and questions whether their outcome was unwittingly dystopian in the context of nineteenth-century planning and showcasing for philanthropic industrialists.
