Irish Mills, 1750-2025 by Fred Hamond, Industrial Archaeologist.

This is the seventh talk in the Water & Ireland's Architectural Heritage autumn Conservation Education talk series.

Abstract: Mills are one of the most ubiquitous type of industrial heritage site in Ireland. This talk reviews their wide range of uses from the mid-1700s onwards, key stages in their technical evolution, and reasons for their demise. The challenges involved in their protection, preservation, restoration, and adaptive reuse are also explored, as is their future relevance.

Fred Hamond is a self-employed Industrial Archaeologist who has worked throughout Ireland for over 40 years on the recording and conservation of its industrial heritage. He has a special interest in wind and watermills and was involved in the restoration of Annalong Mill (Co Down), Ballincollig Gunpowder Mill (Co Cork), Blennerville Windmill (Co Kerry), Elphin Windmill (Co Roscommon), Leitir Mill (Co Donegal), and Mullycovet Mill(Co Fermanagh).
