In 2006 Primrose Wilson invited a group of friends and colleagues to form an organisation to rescue and restore structures which have no regenerative purpose. They formed the Follies Trust and decided their remit would cover monuments and mausolea as well as simply ‘follies’.
In 20 years they have conserved over 30 structures across the island of Ireland. They range from an obelisk in County Londonderry to a small well in County Clare and a Coade stone lion in Roscommon; in addition they include superb mausolea in Belfast, Naas, and Kilbixy, County Westmeath.
In her lecture Primrose will outline the Follies Trust’s journey and illustrate the work they have undertaken to preserve these particular aspects of Ireland’s heritage.
The Follies Trust is grateful to IGS London who financially supported several projects and provided encouragement on many occasions.
Primrose Wilson was honoured with an OBE in 1997 and then made a CBE in 2007. Both the RSUA (Royal Society of Ulster Architects) and the RIAI made her an honorary member while she has also served as Chair of the Historic Buildings Council in NI and also Chair and President of Ulster Architectural Heritage Society as well as Vice President of the Irish Georgian Society.
