For gentlemen (and some ladies) in search of culture, all roads led to Rome in the eighteenth century. Having a portrait painted by Batoni was the sign that you had ‘arrived’ (in the literal and figurative sense). Irish sitters were amongst the first Grand Tourists to seek out Batoni’s services. The choices that they made in terms of dress, deportment and accessories will be the subject of this lecture, as their portraits will be decoded for what they can tell us about the sitters’ personalities and social standing. Jacqui Ansell gained an M.A. in History of Dress from the Courtauld Institute. Having worked as an Education Officer at the National Gallery (London) and she is now Senior Lecturer at Christie’s Education. She has devised and delivered numerous short courses and public lectures at the Wallace Collection, National Gallery, NPG, V&A and Tate Galleries.
